John Jarvie Historic Site

Scotsman John Jarvie and his family arrived in remote Browns Park in 1880, where he opened a general store/trading post. His location was a naturally occurring river crossing and he included a river ferry business in his operations. He was popular with valley residents and visitors alike, and was labeled "the sage of the Uintahs, the genius of Browns Park."

Most of the notorious residents of the Park, like Butch Cassidy, knew him well. However, in 1909, two transient workers robbed and murdered him, setting his dead body adrift in a boat down the Green River. His structures survived the years and this National Historical Site is now managed by the BLM. Jarvies Fest is put on twice a year celebrating the pioneer culture of days gone by.

The Browns Park Road is located off US Hwy 191, about 76 miles south of Rock Springs, WY and about 74 miles north of Vernal, UT. This road is a 25 mile mixture of paved and graded dirt that may be difficult for travel in very wet weather. It descends into the northern end of Browns Park via Jesse Ewing Canyon. From the south, the Park may be accessed via paved CO Hwy 318 70 miles from Maybell, CO
